Strength From Others – Living Support

In nature we can learn much about life through how different plants and animals co-exist one with another for the sake of survival.  From the depths of the ocean to the heights of the mountains we can find examples of species supporting one another to ensure survival in different adverse conditions.  Small fish ride on the backs of the larger fish and keep parasites at bay.  In turn these small fish feed upon these crustaceans, supplying a food source that keeps the circle of life in motion.  From this I see the importance of hanging on to the strong when we are weak.

This tree and vine fascinated me when I first saw it a few years back in Queensland, on the Australian Coast.  As I sat and stared at the vine’s gripping tentacles I wondered, “ Would the vine be able to survive on it’s own without the support of this massive tree?”  If it were to adapt to a different circumstance I’m sure the heights it would reach wouldn’t compare to its skyward heights as it climbs holding on to this behemoth trunk of stately strength.

Ultimately, the source of life for which both of these plants strive to grow from is sunlight that gets cut off from the dense canopy above.  In order to reap the benefit of this golden sunshine the weaker plants must rely on the strong to climb to that great height.

As human beings I believe that this same principle can be utilized as far as we are humble enough to recognize when we are in a weakened state and can benefit from the strength of others around us.  Sometimes we may be tempted to take the easy route and remain in the darkness. However that does not allow us to grow and hinders our ability to climb out of that darkness.

Too often the term weak is thought of in a derogatory sense, yet not a single soul escapes this condition at one point or another within their life.  If you are, as the fish clinging on to a greater life source, do not forget to give back.  Sometimes a gentle hug and a thank you is all that is needed.

In Other’s Words:

“There can only be one state of mind as you approach any profound test; total concentration, a spirit of togetherness, and strength.”
